Taking On ‘Wannabe’ Web Sites

Editorial by: Jere Beery

jerebeery@aol.com

July 7, 2006,

There appears to be two distinctly different veteran’s groups in this country that operate under the sacred POW/MIA flag. The most recognizable of these groups or organizations is the POW/MIA League of Families. Groups like this are totally committed to the full accounting of Missing in Action and Prisoner of War from all wars. These great Americans provide a valuable service to our country and deserve the highest level of respect and praise.

The second type of veteran’s group or organization using the POW/MIA logo is the ‘Wannabe’s & Phonies’ network. This group is committed to exposing individuals that fraudulently claim military service or awards they are not entitled to. The original concept for this movement was inspired by the 1998 book ‘Stolen Valor’, by B. G. Burkett and Glenna Whitley, and over the decades many liars and phonies have been exposed. You can buy Burkett’s book at his ‘official’ web site for $31.95 + $4.95 shipping. http://www.stolenvalor.com/ For an additional $3.00, Mr. Burkett will personally autograph your book. The book has been a big seller and Burkett continues to make a great deal of money off ‘Stolen Valor’.

At first, the effort to expose phony veterans seemed like a good idea and focused primarily on individuals posing as former POWs or Special Forces. However, Burkett’s book launched a movement of self-appointed ‘Guardians of Valor’ that operate more like thugs than Proud Americans. I have discovered some groups are using the POW/MIA banner as a cover for more cynical and hate-driven purposes. These spin-off POW/MIA groups operate under a code of; if you dig deep enough, you can find dirt on anyone. Believe nothing, question everything. A simple VFW bar room war story can lead to a full investigation by one of these unauthorized groups. The next thing the veteran knows is, his picture and military records are posted on the Internet without his permission. In some cases his personal information has been compromised, and he is deemed a phony scumbag because someone overheard him say he had three Purple Hearts and he only had two. Unfortunately, this usually occurs when the veteran has had three drinks, instead of two.

These Wannabe groups are not sanctioned or regulated by any law enforcement, or government agency; they have no real authority to do what they do. Publicly they claim to get all their information about an individual they are investigating through the Freedom of Information Act, (FOIA). But, privately, they boast of having connections within the VA and DOD that will provide them any information they request on an individual.

At this point you must be asking yourself, what the hell does that have to do with the POW/MIA movement. Exactly!

Now, it appears these groups have taken their activities to a new level. According to Chuck and Mary Schantag, of the POW Network, they are on the lookout for disabled veterans they suspect do not deserve the benefits they are currently receiving, and turning their names into the VA Inspector General for possible review and/or benefits fraud. The Schantags claim they turned five veterans into the VA IG in May alone. This is quite a stretch form their original mission of accounting for our Missing in Action.

Supporters of these Wannabe web sites claim they are legally doing exactly the same thing as online sex offender registries do, and people deserve to know if someone is a liar. However, unlike a sex offender registry, the vast majority of veterans listed on the Wannabe web sites have not been charged with a crime. They are not convicted felons. They have not had their day in court to prove their case. They have become victims of vigilante justice. They are guilty of being stupid at most. In some cases, veterans with impeccable military service have been heavily scrutinized and questioned for no real reason at all. What federal or state mandate gives these groups the right to be judge, jury, and executioner?

Several months ago I personally became a target when the POW Network started an investigation on me. Apparently, they didn’t like the looks of my DD214 posted on my web site, and they determined I was guilty of the federal offense of altering my discharge papers. (Two Different Fonts were used on your web page, a clue that all was NOT coposetic) Even after receiving, and publicly distributing 18 pages of my personal military records which verified all of the information on my DD214 was correct, the Schantags refuse to comment or publicly set the record straight. Jere Beery, you KNOW that is an OUTRIGHT LIE.  The addition YOU,  personally, added to your website page DOES NOT, DID NOT appear on your OFFICIAL MILITARY RECORDS.  Your WORD was taken for the fact that you stated the Military Records keeping Dept. Was well behind in their work, that the records were DUE TO BE UPDATED.  You were THUS, merely ASKED to state so on your website.  A DISCLAIMER, as such, stating the TRUE AND HONEST FACTS, THAT YOU WERE DUE WHAT YOU HAD STATED ON YOUR WEBSITE, BUT THAT THE ACTUAL TRUTH WAS, THE MILITARY RECORDS WERE NOT AS OF THE POSTING OF YOUR WEBSITE, BEEN UPDATED TO REFLECT SAID INFORMATION.  YOU HAVE ADAMENTLY REFUSED.  Instead, they quietly allow a cloud of doubt to loom over my service to this country. They refuse to admit they found nothing fraudulent with my military records. To be perfectly frank, I totally resent these bottom-feeders putting their dirty hands on my military records, (No one's dirty hands touched your military records as your's were sent electronically via a .pdf attachment, Sir) much less publicly releasing them to complete strangers over the Internet. Your military records WERE NOT released to complete strangers as you very well know.  It is also a well known fact that ANYONE, CIVILIAN, FELLOW VETERAN, ANYONE, CAN ACCESS THESE SAME RECORDS THROUGH THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT.  THE INFORMATION DEEMED PERSONAL, SUCH AS A PERSON'S SSN AMONG OTHER INFORMATION IS HARSHLY AND COMPLETELY BLACKED OUT TO PROTECT THE PERSONAL RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS OF THE MILITARY PERSONNEL.   This is NOT a law or something that the POW Network just came up with on their own.  This is per regulations and laws of our Country...the DOD, the VA, our Government.  IF you do NOT appreciate this being the case, I SUGGEST you take it up with the APPROPRIATE authorities.  As stated, the DOD, the VA, our Government...NOT THE POW Network.  Some will counter with; “if you have nothing to hide, what does it matter?” I owe no one an explanation of my military service. My military records are ‘mine’, as in ‘M-I-N-E’. Writing to the NPRC to get military records released under the FOIA on complete strangers in hopes of digging up dirt is kind of like farting in church. Sure, you have the right to fart in church, but it won’t win you any friends. And there are very serious questions about how these groups really do get their information.  If you have questions, doubts, accusations, STOP taking it public, TAKE IT WHERE IT BELONGS TO BE TAKEN, THE PROPER AUTHORITIES.  Oops, forgot, you did, and they laughed at you.  It should also be well stated and DOCUMENTED that the ONLY PERSON who continues to accuse, discuss and make ISSUE of the matter is MR. BEERY.  His military records were passed to the person who requested it who hence sent in on to MR. BEERY HIMSELF.  No hidden agenda.

Currently, the Schantags are under investigation by the VA IG for statements they made concerning ‘friends’ sifting through military personnel records, and possible conspiracy to access Social Security numbers and other protected personal information.    Mr. Beery has also accused me, Diane Weller, of having his SSN, of using it, to what end I haven't a clue!, and told me I was under investigation by the VA IG also.  To date, I have heard nothing from anyone.  He also, in a recent email, advised me that IF I did have his SSN, to get rid of it fast and lie my ass off to the VA IG.  I AM NOT A LIAR.  I am a human being who makes mistakes and admits to them when I make them, which is what I advised Mr. Beery also.  I state for public record, I HAVE NOT EVER HAD MR. BEERY'S NOR MR. GENE D. SIMES SSN's.  I don't know what I would want them for, what I'd do with them.  This is a horrendous and stupid accusation and totally unfounded.  My comments at one time when I was being called all kinds of names and being issued death threats just after suffering a stroke and a heart attack, when death was all too near, I said I 'COULD GET' their SSN's if I wanted to.  BUT, AGAIN, WHY WOULD I WANT TO?  TO WHAT END?  TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT?

A number of veterans have complained to me personally about being unjustly embarrassed and publicly humiliated by the POW Network and similar groups. In at least one case, a veteran claims his SS number was stolen which lead to identity theft and thousands of dollars in false charges. In another case, a defamation suit was dismissed when the veteran died before he could confront Chuck and Mary Schantag in court.  THIS case was never hidden from the public nor veterans of today, yesterday or those of tomorrow.  As a matter of fact, Chuck and Mary put out an SOS for a Defense Fund and YOU ALL helped.  They do not charge one single penny to assist anyone.  They follow up on every claim, snippet of information.  Do they shout, yell, proclaim their conquests?  NO.  They get very little GOOD press for all the GREAT THINGS they do.  If a drunken veteran, in a stupor of alcohol, proclaims he has 3 purple hearts while only having 2, HELL YES THAT'S FRAUD!  It's a LIE, it's a claim to unearned fame.  As a fellow patriot, I certainly find it insulting.

Many of us within the veteran’s community are working very hard to unite this country’s former military personnel.  Mr. Beery, you are not working to UNITE this country's Veteran's community...You have done NOTHING for months on end now except write about YOURSELF and YOUR woes, how YOU are constantly getting unfair treatment from EVERYONE.  The last claim I read about, via Rick Townsend's newsletter, which seems to be YOUR newsletter now, was filled to the brim about YOUR INJUSTICE and MISTREATMENT by the VA.  Seemingly everyone is out to get YOU.

Infiltrators within our ranks of the national veteran community are needlessly turning veterans into the VA for investigation. Isn't this what YOU are doing, Mr. Beery?  This is totally unacceptable, and counterproductive to unity within the Veteran’s Rights Movement. These groups thrive on intimidating and discourage legitimate veterans from participating in the public arena by requiring they prove themselves yet again. I find these arbitrary and capricious shake-downs of veteran’s credentials to be extremely damaging to overall morale and totally uncalled for.  At this point in our history, as long as an individual has a Green Card and/or a Voter’s Registration Card, I really don’t care what the hell they did or didn’t do in the service.  I am personally urging sponsors of these groups to reconsider their support and voice their objection of this overzealous witch hunt. I can’t help but wonder if Ann Mills Griffith is aware of the activities taking place under the POW/MIA banner.

Some Wannabe web sites have hate messages posted on them, like; ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’, implying death to the individuals listed there. The Graphix, "Wanted Dead or Alive" pertains to the meaning that America wants our POW/MIAs returned to their homeland, whether or not they are 'dead or alive'.  If they are indeed deceased, we want whatever remains are left so that proper burial and identification can take place.  Families need to KNOW.  Families need to say GOODBYE and KNOW that that is TRULY their loved one.  HOW CAN ANYONE MISUNDERSTAND THAT?

While others are somewhat more subtle with professional looking graphics and audio tracks. http://members.aol.com/viperash50/wannabe/wannabe.html,

I can tell you this with great certainty. The NPRC has already taken steps to improve data security and has also enacted new guideline for all FOIA requests. I can also assure you that the VA and DoD are very aware of possible security breaches by mom and pop groups claiming to be a veteran’s service organization (VSO). Once the VA IG concludes its investigation of the POW Network, and I have received their findings, they will be posted on the FBN.

In a related story, Veteran’s Rights Advocate, Gene Simes of Rochester, NY recently had 6 pages of his military service records released by the Schantages in exactly the same manner.  Gene D. Simes records were requested by me, Diane M. Weller.  When I received his, in paper form, I perused them and then put them in an envelop and mailed them, PERSONALLY, to Mr. Gene D. Simes.  I also just requested another set of records Jere, for my marine's father, who my marine has never known, there have been NO CHANGES in the manner in which MILITARY SERVICE RECORDS ARE RELEASED.  Once again, Mr. Beery, you speak without knowledge.

The Firebase Network wants to know what you think about this issue. Please send your comments to: jerebeery@aol.com  All comments will be posted for public review at:

I have two veterans I would like to see posted on your web site.

Dianne Weller is a 2 year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Weller has been documented as using the title "Gunny Di" in the past. However, she did not serve in the U.S. Marines and was never a Gunnery Sargent. Regardless of whether Weller has stopped this practice does not change the fact she has done this in the past. This means Weller is guilty of publicly falsifying her rank and military title.

The second veteran is Gary Assell. Apparently, Assell openly requested coaching in the development of his VA disability claim for a PTSD rating. I am in contact with 5 people that will confirm Gary Assell was seeking advise on what to say and do to insure his personal PTSD claim was approved. This is fraud in it's basic form, much like stealing answers to a test.

Now, let's see if the POW Network is worthy of remaining open.

JERE BEERY

PS > Chuck, I still haven't received proof of your military service. What is wrong, bro? You put your dirty hands all over mine, why won't you give your's up?

Attention Christina A. Lavine

Director, Hotline Division

July 28, 2006

Reference: (Case Number – 2006-02659-HL-0818 )

Please consider this letter a continuation of Mr. Jere Beery and my formal complaint on the POW Network and Mrs. Dianne Weller. Attached you will find an email written by a Mr. William Gardner. Mr. Gardner has been actively involved in this matter since day one. However, up until now, has been relative quite.

I would like to draw your attention to one particular portion of Mr. Gardner’s email. According to Mr. Gardner’s statement, he personally contacted by telephone ‘a’ VA Regional Office and was given information on my VA and military records.

Our original VA IG complaint (of May 2, 2006) concerned unauthorized access by the general public to personal information of former military personnel, including access to personal Social Security numbers. We are asking your office to include Mr. Gardner’s ‘access attempts’ to your investigation.

Please allow me to ask the following questions;

  • Which VA Regional Office did Mr. Gardner call?
  • Who did he speak with?
  • Did Mr. Gardner have/use my Social Security number to gain access to information on my military service?
  • What information (if any) was provided?

Mr. Beery and I have provided evidence to your investigation that this group of individuals has attempted to illegally capture SS numbers of veterans. Mr. Gardner’s email implies that he has in fact stolen my SS number, as that is the only way my records could be accessed within the VA. You simply cannot call up the VA and ask for military service verification on ‘Bob Smith’. You would need Mr. Smith’s SS number.

I am extremely upset by this matter, and I respectfully request the VA IG confirm, or deny Mr. Gardner’s claims. Not only am I concerned about the availability and protection of my personal information, I am deeply concerned for my fellow veterans as well.

If it turns out that Mr. Gardner is lying about this incident, then someone needs to warn Mr. Gardner about claiming the VA is arbratraly releasing information on veterans without cause or approval.

If Mr. Gardner did in fact receive the information he claimed in his email, then someone at the VA is releasing false information concerning my service. And that’s not good either.

In this day of veterans’ personal information concerns, the last thing the VA needs is someone claiming the VA is providing them questionable and false information. I truly hope you see the problem here.

Please review the email below.

Thank you,

Subject: [Norton AntiSpam] Re: HOW CAN YOU ADVERTISE AND PUT INTO THE LIMELIGHT GENE SIMES AND SCAM AND SHAM AGAINST AMERICAN HEREOS, AMERICAN'S VETERANS?

If I read all of this correctly then I understand that a lot of speakers will be from the Veterans Administration.  If that's not true then disregard this e-mail.

How in the hell can Gene invite VA officials to speak on behalf of veterans when we all know that the VA will lie to anybody just to make themselves look good.  They lie to Congressional committees by telling them they are providing the best care possible to "every" veteran that is enrolled in the VA system.  And then they turn around and ask Congress for more money to "improve" the system.  And we all know that that money is not being spent in the best interest of veterans.

Gene is out of his mind if he believes for one minute that anything said or promised by any VA official at this March will be truthful.  Nothing like sleeping with the enemy Gene!!

In many of my e-mails with him he PROMISED me that veterans would have their chance to sit face to face with their Congressman/women and Senators and air their complaints.  Are we to actually believe that any Congressman or Senator is going to be sitting in a room, waiting for hundreds of veterans asking for their help?  I may be stupid but I'm sure not dumb - that will NEVER happen.  And many other people who strongly believe in Gene have also e-mailed me and told me that Gene told them the very same thing - "they will be able to talk face to face with their politicians.  Don't for one minute believe that that will happen.  If anybody does their going to be in for a huge let down.

When myself and one other veteran put together a rally to be held on the steps of our Capital Building in Salem, OR., I notified Gene about everything we had done and done it in less than two weeks.  We had T.V. coverage, news paper coverage from the largest paper in Oregon.  We had guest speakers lined up and NONE of them were from the VA.  We reported we were "ready to go."  And if we would have done this, the cost for everything was out of the pockets of myself and another veteran.  That cost came to over $1100.00.  But Gene totally ignored what I reported to him.  All he kept asking for was for me to ensure that myself and the other veteran to ensure that we donated ten dollars for toilets.  When I told him we were prepared to spend $1100.00 of our own money on his March, but was not going to donate, that is when he kept e-mailing me and telling me that we HAD TO DONATE TEN STINKING DOLLARS.  Additionally he wanted me to ask each veteran that I could reach in the State of Oregon to donate ten dollars.  I was not about to try and contact over 9,000 veterans in Oregon and I told Gene that.  But he refused to listen to me and again, demanded we send him ten dollars.  That is when I went on his homepage and started doing some research.

It was at that time that I read his Bio.  I noticed there was no mention of him being a combat veteran and asked him about that.  Less than a week later I re-read his Bio. and it showed that he was a combat veteran.  He informed me that he had a Purple Heart and I asked him over and over to tell me which conflict or war he got it and how he got it.  He said that it wasn't important, that the only thing that was important was MONEY for the March.  So Gene, if you are reading this then why won't you tell me and others you have told, just how you got the Purple Heart and in which conflict or war did you get it.  Why would you not be proud to tell people about that.  Why hide it?  The answer is - you damn well was not a combat veteran and you sure as hell was not awarded the Purple Heart.  And Gene, if you want to know how I found that out I will tell you - I made ONE phone call to the Veterans Administration's Regional Office.  Although I don't trust the VA, I thoroughly believed what they told me about you.  How dare you degrade the honor of those that deserved and awarded the Purple Heart.

I want everybody to know that I was a fool to actually believed that Gene was doing this from his heart instead of trying to fill his check book.  There is a legal form that anybody can fill out and have served to Gene that demands that he gives an accounting of all monies he has received and where he spent them.  If he fails to comply with this legal paper he can be cited into court.  I will try and find the name of it and post it.  Maybe if enough people fill them out and he fails to comply, he might be looking at a huge fine, long jail time or both.  I know when I find it I am going to have it served on him.  There may be a cost to the Sheriff's department to have them serve it on him but I would gladly pay any fee if they would do it.

It goes without say, and we all know that there is a tremendous problem with the Veterans Administration.  We also know that one or two veterans cannot change it.  I've tried but to no avail.  So that does leave the question - how do we get the VA and politicians to listen to us.  Doing it the way Gene is attempting is a total waste of time.  Granted there will probably be news coverage about the March and a few veterans will be interviewed - Gene of course will be THE MAN in his eyes and take all the credit.  But credit is not going to solve the ongoing problems.

It's just my opinion but I believe we should all take a few steps back, look at the ongoing fraud and scam that Gene is involved with and take care of him first.  Then we need to regroup, taking our time and rethink of a way to put together, not a March, but a "peaceful protest" in Washington D.C., following all applicable laws.  If that is not possible then maybe over a period of time we could find somebody from each State to rally all the veterans within that State and protest against the VA.  It doesn't have to be on the same date, same time.  Just as long as each State logically presents the ongoing and persistent problems that we struggle with the VA on a daily basis.

A veteran in New Mexico started a movement against the VA by simply renting space on huge billboard signs accusing the VA of not taking care of veterans.  It soon caught on and before to long veterans groups were renting billboards in a lot of States.  It caught the attention of the news media and snowballed from there.  The veteran did get his claim resolved and ended up becoming a veterans service officer.  From there he found veterans that were willing to go through the VA's training to become a certified veteran officers and those individuals started helping veterans.  As far as I know this is still ongoing and has produced excellent results.  Just a thought.

What Gene is counting on is a HUGE show of veterans in D.C.  That would make his dream come true.  I for one hope that it fails.  And it would be nice to see in the news where it did fail and to see Gene being interviewed, being asked why there was such a low turn out.  That would leave it wide open for veterans to contact the news media and explain why it didn't work.

It takes a strong willed individual with a background in organizing huge public events to make them a success.  Gene does not possess these skills.  He however is good at scamming money from veterans, some who can barely afford to give ten dollars.  And when you tell Gene you are not going to donate then you automatically become a person that Gene wants nothing to do with anymore, other than to spam your mail boxes with his worthless e-mails.  And he's not smart enough to understand when a veteran tells him to stop sending e-mails to them, he totally ignores their requests.  No matter what the subject is, if you prove to Gene that he is wrong, he will either ignore you or argue with you until you can't stand to listen to another word he says.

Gene OWES a thorough explanation and needs to provide proof where all the money has gone.  Anybody can forge a financial sheet to make it look like the money was spent in good faith.  I think that is what Gene has done.

Gene is still begging for veterans to spread the word about the March.  Well I am doing what he asked.  Only I'm spreading the TRUTH about the March, not what Gene wants me to say.  And there isn't a day that has gone by that I have not met a veteran that I have told this to.  And I vow to continue to belittle Gene and his March until it hopefully fails to materialize.

What a total disgrace this is to those veterans who have trusted Gene.  If they only open their minds they will see that this is a scam.  But what is even worse is one Brother scamming hundreds of other Brothers.  I refuse to even consider Gene as a veteran Brother.  One must have honor to be a Brother and be willing to put himself at the bottom if need be.  Gene has opted to put himself first.

Ms. Weller,
It was determined that the uniforms he was wearing were not Marine Corps, but rather Marine Corps League, and he was not wearing them properly.  The Executive Director for the Marine Corps League is embarrassed for his organization and will be taking it up Mr. Sims.  Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about the harassment part of the problem.  That is something you will have to address through either a lawyer or the police.
Sincerely,
M. Boyt

THANK YOU.  I LOCATED THIS LAST NIGHT.  I know a USMC Veteran who CRAMS himself into a USMC uniform when speaking "politically" on the steps in DC, Mr. Gene D. Simes, Vietnam Veteran, Purple Heart Recipient, who wears another cap with said USMC uniform......looking weird and rather 'off the wall'.  Many retired Marines as well as currently serving Marines have complained that he is 'spitting upon their history as well as their honor and dignity'.  He DID, I don't know if it's still there, have a video of this on his website.....
www.vetmarch2006.NET  Yes, it is one of the first 5 photos displayed in the larger box on the main page.

I am copying you one of their latest 'threat' and hate letters to me.  They have now drug into this sorry matter a reknowned reporter.  I have blocked their emails but they continue to locate someone 'new' to send me their hatemail and life-threatening mail.  They have been searching for my telephone no.  Attempting to find out what im I might use.....one reason I do not use ANY!  I have contacted AOL to report their abuse, but as usual, no response.  I guess there is nothing wrong with death wishes and calling a 50 year old woman that blasted 'c' word which I utterly DESPISE!

VA Inspector General

Department of Veterans’ Affairs

Please allow me to ask the following questions;

P.S.S.: PLEASE, ALLOW ME TO GO BACK INTO THE SHADOWS OF "BLACK-OPS" TO STAND-GUARD AGAINST THE "BARBARIAN-RULERS"... AND, PRESERVE OUR EARNED AND ENTITLED BENEFITS AND NOT DISCREATIONARY SPENDING$ AS THEY THE "COWARDS" WANT TO CALL IT IN THEIR "REVISIONIST-HISTORYS"...

P.P.S.: ONCE AGAIN THINK ABOUT THIS THAT THIS IS GOING OUT TO ALL MY 1 MILLION PLUS, "TRUE" VETERANS SO BE AWARE AND YOU WILL HAVE ONE REAL-FAN, "TRAITOR-JANE-FONDA"

LUVU L8R,

DOC MARCELLIUSX
"LIBRE DE OPPRESSO" "VERITAS ET LIBERTAS"

And a final and strong WARNING to you Mr. Townsend...if you publish this, you WILL publish it IN IT'S ENTIRETY.
